Objective: To increase community participation in
aerobic exericise.
Strategy and Execution: Over 900
businesses were targeted for this four-month "Health Trip 93"
campaign sponsored by the region's Chamber of Commerce, public
health department and hospitals. To improve heart and lung health,
participants received credit on a U.S. m ap for periods of excerise.
For each 15 minutes of excercise, individuals were able to move 1/4
on the map. The kick-off event employed imprinted zipper pulls and
yo-yo's distributed in promotional bags. Participants received gifts
at certain milestones, including a long sleeve t-shirt at 48 miles,
which completed the map. PSAs, business fairs and newspaper ads and
other community support promoted the event.
Results: A survey showed
over 87% of participants indicated the gifts were incentives to keep
going to work for the best gifts. Close to 1,700 people
participated.
