Class: Internal Promotion
Objective: To increase employee awareness and
participation in a program to decrease violations, accidents and
lost time injuries, specifically to reduce incident factor from 5.0
to 3.5 in the 1991 calendar year.
Strategy and Execution: Adopting the
theme "Safety Comes in Cans...I Can, You Can, We Can," the
advertiser kicked off the program in January with replica cans
bearing a Witco motor oil label from the Fifties and copy asking
each of the 200 refinery, office, and managerial personnel to 'make
a commitment to safety.' Inside were an imprinted t-shirt and
specifics of the safety incentive 'can-paign.' Additional
specialties with safety messages were delivered in a can each month
(koozie kup with "Insulate ourselves with Witco Safety"). An auto
sunshade was given to participants completing a safety riddle at the
end of the six-month mark. The grand prize was a beach vacation to
Cancun, Mexico, which employees who went the entire year without
incident were eligible for. Each received a can at a safety meeting.
One of the cans bore the copy "Witco Can-Cun Vacation," and when all
cans were opened simultaneously, the prize winner was uncanned and
others found a stuffed raccoon.
Results: It was reported
97% of the plant employees participated, and an all-time record of
more than 280,000 man-hours without a lost time injury was achieved.
The goal of a 3.5 incident factor was surpassed - to .04, and earned
Golden Bear the prestigious 'Witco Presidents Award' for incident
rate reduction for 1991.
